Exercise Classes for Seniors

Welcome to an Ageless Grace® class – a whole new way of getting fit – Senior Style*

Sue Silcox describes her Ageless Grace exercise classes for seniors. Read on to find out more.

If you were to come and walk down the corridor in my local library just before 11am every Wednesday, you would find a group of people chatting, laughing and generally looking forward to their next hour. Dressed in loose, comfortable clothing, they are waiting for the door to be opened so that they can join our Ageless Grace® class.

Once the door is opened, in they flock – still chatting and lining up to pay the small fee for attendance at their weekly class. Mainly senior women, they have been coming along nearly every week – some of them for the past four years. For some of them, they have already had a walk today or gone to a yoga class or even played tennis. For the rest, this is the only fitness session they will experience during the week. They are coming for their dose of fun and fitness! They have some expectations that will be met, but each week a different view unfolds – which creates a bit of mystery and anticipation.

While they gossip and get themselves ready, one man pulls out the chairs and puts them into the circle while I say hello to everyone, welcome newcomers and get the music ready.

At last everyone is ready. The “students” have buzzed around, deciding where to sit and taking off their shoes. Some have a drink of water with them and many of them don’t. There is a definite buzz of excitement in the room as everyone wonders what adventures and stories we will get involved in today. And so it begins …

Exercise Classes for Seniors: A Typical Ageless Grace Class

That is really the only common factor in my Ageless Grace® classes, wherever they happen to be: anticipation, a sense of fun and friendship. From here on in, anything can happen as we sit in our chairs and move our bodies.

If this is your first time in a class you would be told about how to sit and move safely – to look out for your knees, shoulders, back and any other injuries you may have. You would also be told about why we sit in a chair – not because we are too frail to move but first and foremost, because we want our brains to play an active part in this fitness class, as it works out how to dance a waltz while you sit in  a chair, or how to mix cement to make a path! You’ll also be told about how Ageless Grace® focuses on 21 ageing factors: factors such as flexibility, balance, brain health, foot health, joint mobility and more.

The music is turned on and the first Ageless Grace® exercise starts! Music is upbeat and I aim to play songs that would have been popular when these seniors were younger. The movements also reflect some of the things we could have done when we were younger, though we would still do many of them in our daily lives. Sitting in the chair we use the creative side of our brain by imagining doing an everyday task. For example, perhaps we’ll clean the submarine windows on the outside while listening to “Yellow Submarine” (note, that’s a new idea that just came to me – I might use that tomorrow!). While you run with that idea think about what parts of your body would be moving? Maybe we’ll spell words that are yellow, each item with a different part of our body! Moving as much as each one of us is capable of, we’ll move to condition our body and brain. Weight bearing? Imagine lifting weights in the Olympics. Feel your biceps at work as you lift your arms up. Sore shoulders? Make sure you only lift your weights as far as your shoulders will allow. Cardio conditioning? You may be surprised how actively you will move, how warm you can get and how your heart and respiration increase. Yet, I have never had anyone say they ached after a class.

In this class, we will probably get through fourteen to seventeen physical factors. Each one will have a different song to move to and play with. Many people say how their mood has improved during the class as we laugh at the playfulness and our memories. I will start the class knowing which songs will be played and which benefits we will concentrate on but the stories and directions are never known. It’s a surprise for me, too!

My Wednesday class lasts for one hour. Other classes I run last for shorter times, according to people’s frailty or their other commitments. Other Educators have classes of different durations, too. When you contact an Educator that is one of the questions you may want to ask them.

I can only write about my exercise classes for seniors. To find out how other Educators run their classes why not look for a class near you and contact the Educator. You will be really surprised at how much you can enjoy your new-found routine!

* Although I concentrate on Senior Fitness, Ageless Grace® is a wonderful practice to use with anyone. Children, in particular, can benefit from the developmental aspect of this state-of-the-art brain health program.
